His Eyes Opened: The Story of a Saber Cat

Post  Sarianis on Fri Mar 18, 2011 4:13 am

The forest surrounding the sanctuary of the druids known as Moonglade was still and quiet. The wind blew gently through the trees, and the beauty of their colorful leaves was dulled a little by the darkening night sky. Two saber cats, one a very dark purple color and the other a shimmering white reminiscent of moonlight, skulked among the many of their kind populating the area and were out hunting deer for dinner.

As they crept with the kind of stealth only predatory cats can muster among the foliage and beams of silvery moonlight that shone among the trees, the pair spotted their quarry - and something else. A lone tattooed Orc, dressed in tattered red robes, was carefully drawing a circle of some kind in the soft earth. The two saber cats, being curious by nature, watched from their hidden position.

When the large red-robed Orc stood back from his circle, two more Orcs stepped from their own concealed positions. The cats grew bored, and began to leave to resume their hunt. However, they noticed a Kaldorei patrol nearby as they crept away. The Elves were approaching the Orc position, and were heavily armed. Having received medical care and food from the Kaldorei in the past, and thus regarding them as friends, the two cats silently approached the patrol and followed alongside.

As the Kaldorei spread out to surround the Orcs, the cats split as well. The darker colored one went up a tree to drop on the Orcs from above, while the white one circled with the archer (who seemed grateful for the assistance) to flank the Orc position.

The saber in the tree waited for a good opportunity to jump on one of the Orcs and tear it to shreds, as he watched the archer open fire on one of the second Orcs, and his mate hold off one of the other. He saw the red-robed Orc move closer to his position to escape the arrows of the Kaldorei archer. The saber tensed every bit of his four hundred pound body in preparation to fall on the apparent leader...

As the dark purple saber was about to pounce, he saw the eerie circle the leader of the Orcs had drawn shimmer a little...and the air around it "open". Several creatures the saber did not recognize poured out. They were small and very mean-looking things. He smelled something he did not recognize emanating from them. The things were impossibly fast...and as he jumped on the leader of the other two Orcs - all four hundred pounds of saber cat tearing into him, the dark purple cat saw the two others converge on his mate and the Kaldorei archer...

The red-robed Orc fell as the big cat landed on him, frantically clawing at his face with his large claws. He had torn an eye and most of the flesh off before the Orc could concentrate enough to cast a spell. A wave of force threw the cat some distance away into the foliage, allowing the leader to regain his footing and aid his companions.

As the dark purple saber righted himself and began to charge back into the small clearing, he paused a brief instant as the world around him faded and he felt something stirring in the wind. Before his startled eyes, the saber saw a massive translucent saber cat materialize in a thin cloud of leaves blown on the cool air. He growled deeply and hissed at the thing, but the much larger cat fixed him with a gaze that bore through him and seemed to root him to the spot. The spirit channeled a torrent of images, thoughts, and emotions into the now terrified saber. At the conclusion of this display, the smaller cat looked at the spirit with a glint of intellect shimmering in his predator's eyes...and the spirit spoke a brief message to the dark purple saber: "Andu-falah-dor, Sarianis!". It then placed a paw on the newly named saber's shoulder, marking him in Elune's sight. The saber felt a chill wind blow gently through his fur, and the Great Cat Spirit faded back into the leaves once again, leaving Sarianis on the edge of the clearing once more.

Sarianis looked into the clearing from the foliage, and saw most of the mean-looking things either dead or fleeing. The Orc leader was standing over the bodies of the Kaldorei archer and the white saber...his mate. There was a pile of ashes with melted bits of metal in them that could only have been the other Elf. One of the assistants to the leader lay dead, and looked like a small squad of archers had used it for target practice. The other lay eviscerated near the fire, a short sword still clenched in it's dead hand.

The cat was furious, and let loose a roar that seemed to shake the ground itself. The red-robed Orc whipped around and was met with the sight of the same large saber cat he thought his magic had killed flying toward him on the downward portion of a pounce. It looked angry. The Orc tried to use a wand, but a swipe of a large paw reduced the hand to a grotesque hunk of meat and bone. The cat thudded into the Orc and bore him to the ground, trying to tear out his throat. But the Orc was no stranger to battle...he had been chosen to lead this mission, after all. Shrugging the pain away, he managed to draw a pitted, rusty dagger and slash the cat's stomach as his throat was ripped out by feline jaws.

How long Sarianis lay there he could not tell. Thankfully the druids of Moonglade sent a rather large group to learn why their patrol had not returned. They found a grisly scene - the bodies of the Orcs, the Elves, and the white saber cat. Sarianis gingerly turned his head toward them and managed a weak "mrowl" sound. One of the druids walked toward him and leaned down to examine the injury. As she placed a hand near the wound, her eyes widened and she sharply drew in a breath. Looking up with an expression of wonder on her tattooed face, she told the others "Kin, come quickly! This saber is (She looked down at the wounded cat with a smile.) marked before the goddess!" At that, she poured a little clean water on the wound to wash debris from it as the others approached. Their leader, an older Elf with a thick beard and a booming voice that reminded listeners of a landslide rolling down a mountain, took one look at the cat and broke into a wide grin. "We'll take him back to the circle. Let me see the wound first - I smell the taint of demons here."

The older Kaldorei took one look at the injury on the saber's stomach and growled. He placed a hand over it and reached into the reservoirs of druidic magic at his command to slowly remove the demonic poison from the wound. Sarianis grunted a little, beginning to feel better. Well enough, in fact to roll onto his back and lick the wound. Amazingly, the injury looked a little less severe with each pass of the big cat's tongue. The elves smiled as the cat was actually *healing* the injury a bit. The leader spoke again. "Well...now I KNOW the circle will want to meet this one. This is not unprecedented, but it seems that whatever happened here...Elune touched this cat to enable him..." The druid paused and his eyes widened as a torrent of images and emotions flooded his mind's eye. Flashes of the events that took place here and a sense of loss for the elves who died came to his mind. When they stopped, he looked down and saw the cat looking directly at him with an intense stare. "Sarianis, is it? Well...let us burn the Orcs. Bring the dead with us that we might see them to the goddess' side."

It was many cycles of the moon before Sarianis fully recovered from the demon-tainted wound. During that time, he became something of a pet to the druids of Moonglade. He would go into the woods during the night and would be found next to several neatly skinned game animals in the morning. It was almost as if he were trying to repay the druids' kindness in healing him. As time went on, he began to follow their patrols as they traveled the old forests. They soon learned that the blessed saber cat was a tracker and hunter without peer. They began to trust him with increasing levels of responsibility until one day when a wounded archer stumbled into Moonglade, knowing the druids there could treat the poison delivered by the arrow in his shoulder. The archer collapsed just inside the sanctuary the druids called home, and the big cat was the first to reach his side. To the amazement of the druids looking on, the cat pulled the arrow from the archer's shoulder and placed a paw over the wound. The elf immediately began to recover.

The rest, friends, is a story for another time. Suffice it to say that after that incident, there was no question that the cat had access to druidic magics. Whether by some happy circumstance, or by the will of Elune herself, who can say save for the cat himself? A certain archdruid nearly as old as Malfurion Stormrage himself began to teach the cat to hone his connection to nature. Among the thing he was taught: The ability to take Kaldorei form - granting him the use of opposable thumbs, the ability to speak a few phrases of Darnassian (although the saber's mind lacked the development of most humanoids, and he was not able to learn more than a few phrases), and to begin the path of all druids. After some time had passed, Sarianis was sent into the wider world to learn the ways of civilizations and societies - for these things were yet alien to him.

((This concludes the story of Sarianis' origin. More will be posted, as the four-hundred pound saber cat had many adventures and made a few friends (actual player-characters existing in-game) in the process. Those stories will be told in other threads. For now, Sarianis himself can be reached in-game for the first-hand accounts.))

Awakened

Post  Sarianis on Thu Jun 02, 2011 12:24 am

The melancholy light of dusk filled the air in Deathknell that night. A pair of feline eyes observed from the scant cover offered by a pair of hedges that somehow grew in the blighted soil. Several angelic figures floated amongst the graves in the area.

One of them, absorbed in her task with raising yet another Forsaken soldier, failed to notice the disappearance of one of the others. A sound like fabric being torn underwater reached her ears for the briefest of moments before calm permeated the air. She turned from her task for a moment before shrugging it off - who would dare attack such a place?

=====================================================================================

From his hiding place in the hills nearby, a sentient saber cat spit up a chunk of corpse he had accidentally ingested while taking down the Val 'Kyr. So it *was* possible. These beings were not invincible, after all. He made a pleased mrowl sound and vanished - only to re-appear in Valiance Keep just in time for the Republic of Nasam's weekly gathering. Why so many were so fond of these things, he would never understand...the last time he had been tricked into drinking alcohol, he hard torn the tavern apart. Literally.

For now, the feline settled into his place by the fire after coughing up a finger and cleaning the hunks of gore from his body...there was work to be done, certainly...but Elune is a patient Goddess, and the cat is a patient hunter.

Called to Her Side

Post  Sarianis on Sun Jun 26, 2011 12:48 am

The large saber cat lay curled up on the altar in the old temple in Ferelas, snoring contentedly. The serene feeling permeating the place was compounded by the sense of history and the relaxing sound of water flowing gently over the ancient stonework to form the small pool around the pedestal and it's feline occupant.

The big cat shook a rear paw several times before reaching it towards his jaw, unconsciously scratching at the nasty scar a recent fight had left there. He woke slowly, and rolled over when the sound of a soft breeze floated into the chamber. He saw the wind carrying a large group of leaves and twigs - bits of the surrounding ancient forest - towards him until they stopped at the pedestal...they simply hung in the air.

A soft voice, recognizable as that of a female Kaldorei spoke. Her words seemed to come from the evening breeze, the rippling water, and the very walls of the chamber. "Ande'thoras-ethil, Sarianis" Following the words, the cloud of leaves gradually took two distinct forms. One was a white saber cat...and Sarianis looked at her in amazement for a moment before plodding down from the pedestal to sniff her warily. A single tear of joy ran down his muzzle as his eyes lit up in recognition. She was his mate...the white saber who died during the attack on that Orc warlock ((See above backstory)).

Sarianis licked her muzzle, and the two large cats began to purr softly, greatly pleased to be together again - even after the death of one. Sarianis looked up at the female Kaldorei in wonder. She smiled at him, scratched behind his ear, and motioned for him to follow her. The white saber nudged him with her head in encouragement. The radiant elf locked her gaze with his. Her lips did not move, yet the same angelic voice was heard by the big cat once more. "Thero'shan, I am pleased. You have done what was needed. They are now aware. You may not understand, now or ever, but it is not yours to end the blight. That choice rests with others. Your time in this world is over, your calling fulfilled, and your reward well-earned. Come along, and enjoy your rest."

The three figures walked out of the ruins and into the old, silent forest. They slowly faded into the ancient trees...and were gone.
